Hello everyone and welcome back to Fran’s Friends! It is early in the morning here, and the sun hasn’t quite come up with the heat yet, so I decided it was the perfect quiet moment to sit down and share my latest crafting journey with you all.

Today, we are talking about a material that holds a truly special place in my heart: the humble canvas tote bag. I like to call this project “the plight of the canvas bag,” but really, it is a celebration of recycling, sustainability, and endless creativity.

A Special Delivery from the UK

My wonderful son just came home from the United Kingdom for a few days, and he always brings me the most brilliant gifts: canvas bags from the various conferences he attends. He even brought me a custom tote incorporating Fran’s Friends with little pictures on it, which is just so cute!

These bags arrive in a beautiful mix of colours, sizes, and thicknesses. Every time I get a new batch, I carefully sort through them and set them aside. When a new soft sculpture concept comes to mind, I can dip into my stash and choose the exact canvas weight that suits the project.

To Cut or Not to Cut?

While many bags are destined for the fabric scissors, my son brought one specific bag that is absolutely fabulous. It is thick, heavy, and beautiful, so I have decided I am definitely not cutting this one up.

Instead, I am going to utilise it as a functional bag for myself. To make it my own, I plan to print an AI photo onto my specialised canvas computer paper and attach it right onto the front of the bag.

Dealing with Corporate Logos

Since these conference totes are given out by companies, they usually feature large corporate logos. But don’t let that deter you! You can easily reclaim the fabric by either painting over the logos or covering them up with your own attached pictures and fabric panels.

Smart Prep and Salvaging Every Scrap

When you do decide to slice up a tote for crafting, always start cutting from the sides. Most importantly, save the handles! Canvas handles are incredibly sturdy and can be repurposed into belts, structural straps, or unique accents for your soft sculptures.

If you come across a bag where the canvas feels a bit too flimsy, there is an easy fix. I like to iron the fabric flat and then reinforce it by adding a fleece underlining. This simple step gives the material the wonderful stability you need to cleanly cut out your project pieces.

From Tote Bags to Soft Sculptures

Canvas is a dream to work with because it generally does not fray very much, and it adapts beautifully to paint. Acrylic paints work like an absolute charm on canvas, allowing you to transform a basic tan bag into any character you can imagine.

Over the years, I have transformed simple recycled bags into a wonderful menagerie of characters, including:

• A trio of frogs (two females and one male) painted a vibrant green and dressed up in custom fabric clothing.
• A rustic rooster and a hen.
• A grand Mexican stork.
• A spooky Halloween crow, painted with rich black acrylic and embellished with festive holiday pumpkins.

Looking at a bright yellow bag in my current stash, I can already see a future bumblebee soft sculpture, or perhaps a lovely blue or grey piece could be turned into a whale. The world is truly wide open.

The Secret to a Lasting Finish

Once a sculpture is stitched, painted, and detailed, I always apply one final crucial step to protect my hard work. I use a Varathane spray to thoroughly coat the finished piece. This seals the acrylic paint and keeps the surface from cracking or peeling over time, ensuring the sculpture stays beautiful for years to come.

What’s Next on the Horizon?

I cannot wait to get started on my AI photo bag project. Once that beautiful, heavy tote is finished, I am going to use it to keep all of my special promotional materials organised. It will be the perfect companion for when I do website promotions for events like the Vancouver Island Exhibition this coming autumn!
