Welcome back, friends! If you know me, you know that crafting is my absolute biggest passion. I love to build, paint, and create. For a long time, I tried to channel that creative energy into traditional gardening. I used to have a massive, vibrant succulent garden, but let’s be honest for a moment—succulents are an incredible amount of work! Between the constant propagation and the endless army of baby succulents taking over, it became overwhelming. Plus, I’ve never been someone who actually likes getting my hands dirty!

I knew I wanted my yard to be a peaceful, quiet sanctuary, but I needed a way to achieve that serenity without the endless chore of heavy gardening. So, I decided to take my favorite hobby outside.

If you want to create a gorgeous, character-filled yard without the high-maintenance hassle, here is how I traded my trowel for a chopsaw to craft the perfect garden oasis!

Keeping it Simple with Smart Plants
Now, I haven’t gotten rid of all the green. My husband is the true green thumb of the family—he handles the veggie patch with the garlic, zucchini, and carrots. For my areas, I decided to keep things incredibly simple, beautiful, and low-maintenance.

My absolute favorites are my Hostas, which offer gorgeous foliage with very little effort. I also swear by Crocosmia “Lucifer.” Later in the season, they erupt into these stunning, vibrant red flowers. The best part? The bright red acts like a magnet for hummingbirds, bringing wonderful life and movement into the yard without me having to lift a finger.

Bringing the Craft Room to the Great Outdoors
Once the basic plants were set, it was time for the real fun to begin. Why limit crafting to the indoors? I decided to use my passion for making things to fill the yard with color and personality.
Instead of stressing over delicate flowers that might die or require constant deadheading, I brought out my chopsaw and band saw to create custom wooden fish to decorate my space. I also love collecting seashells and using them to embellish unique planters, which I paint in bright, beautiful blues to create striking accent pieces around the yard. Even something as simple as finding a smooth rock and painting it bright red adds an instant, cheerful pop of colour.

The Ultimate Secret: No-Fuss Seasonal Cleanup
One of the absolute best perks of a crafted garden is what happens when the season ends. Traditional gardening requires a massive time commitment in the autumn—transplanting, digging up bulbs, trimming back dead foliage, and prepping the soil for winter.

With a craft-focused garden, my seasonal cleanup is a total breeze. When the weather turns, I don’t have to worry about digging anything up or shielding delicate plants from the frost. I simply pick up my painted planters, wooden art, and decor pieces, and nicely put them away in storage. They stay perfectly preserved, ready to brighten up the yard again next spring!

Looking Ahead to Future Projects
This yard is truly a labor of love, and I am nowhere near done! I am constantly dreaming up new art projects to add character to the garden while keeping my workload light.
Next up on my crafting list, I’m planning to incorporate outdoor paintings, decorative frames, and unique ironwork. I also love giving old furniture a second life, so you can definitely expect a lot of bright, fun paint jobs on outdoor tables and Adirondack chairs in the near future.

No matter what your favorite hobby is, I always say: take it to the limit with your passion! For me, that meant rethinking what a garden could be and building a space that brings me pure joy and tranquility—minus the muddy hands.
