Happy Easter everyone! Today is Easter Sunday, and I couldn’t resist adding a few more long-eared friends to my collection. Easter is all about the pastels—pinks, purples, and all those beautiful spring colors—and I’ve been busy stitching up something truly special to celebrate.
The French Knot Bunny
I’ve had a certain pattern on hand for quite a while, and I decided to shrink it down to create these adorable little Easter bunnies. I made a pair of them: one in pink and purple, and the other with the colors reversed. They even have little hearts and bows on their backs to give them that extra festive touch!
What makes these bunnies so unique is the texture. I used a “French knot fabric” technique for the front of the body. If you haven’t tried it yet, it involves creating a dense surface of French knots on a piece of fabric before assembling your project. It gives the bunny a wonderful, tactile feel that is just “sweeter than spun honey!”
Reusing Favorite Patterns
If you want to try this at home, you can actually look back at some of my videos from last year. I have a series on making a “Memory Bear” from T-shirt fabrics. This bunny is essentially a smaller, modified version of that bear pattern.
The body is a simple two-piece design. For these bunnies, I used the French knot fabric for the front and a coordinating solid fabric for the back. Once you sew the two pieces together and add your stuffing, you can use small beads and strategic stitching to “pinch” the fabric, creating the look of little arms and legs.
Engineering the Perfect Bunny Head
For the head, I took a slightly different approach than my usual stuffed bear heads. I used a wooden ball with a pre-drilled hole. To secure it to the body:
- I used a one-inch screw.
- I inserted the screw through the top of the body fabric.
- I used a nut and bolt system underneath to tighten everything up and keep the head stable.
To finish it off, I made a little cap for the wooden ball and added some long bunny ears. It’s a sturdy and cute way to give your soft sculpture a bit of character!
Easter Basket Surprises
These little rabbits are the perfect size to tuck into Easter baskets. I’m planning to place each of them into the pom-pom baskets I made earlier. It just adds that extra “oomph” to the holiday decor.
I’ve also been playing around with this French knot technique on other shapes, like little hearts, which are just as fun to make. Do go back and check out the tutorial on creating the French knot fabric if you want to see the process in detail.
It’s been a wonderful Easter Sunday of crafting, and I’m already looking forward to venturing onto something new tomorrow. Thanks for joining me on my crafting journey, and I’ll see you all again very soon!
