I Used AI to Create Crafting Patterns for a Delivery Stork Art Doll (and this happened!)

Hello again, everyone! It is so wonderful to have you back at Fran’s Friends. Today, I am bursting with excitement to share a project that is a bit of a “first” for me. If you have been following my latest adventures, you’ll know I’ve just come back from a glorious holiday in Mexico. While I was there, I spotted the most charming stork sculpture in a little restaurant, and I simply couldn’t leave that inspiration behind!

This time, however, I decided to do things a bit differently. I invited a new friend into my sewing room: Artificial Intelligence!

The Inspiration: A Mexican Holiday Spark

It all began with a few photos I snapped while away. I wanted to recreate the character of that Mexican stork but as a soft, three-dimensional art doll. I wanted him to feel vintage, quirky, and full of personality. Meet my Jabiru soft doll creation.

To get started, I used Gemini to help me organize my thoughts. I fed it my photos and asked for a comprehensive project plan. It was like having a professional designer sitting right next to me! Together, we mapped out a plan for what I’ve named the Mexican Delivery Stork.

Phase One: Drafting the Vision

The project started with pattern drafting. The AI was incredibly helpful in suggesting the various pieces I would need, from the side panels for the body to the specific shape of the wings and the gussets needed to give him that lovely, rounded belly.

Once the pattern was ready, I moved on to my favourite part: choosing materials. In true Fran’s Friends fashion, I looked for ways to upcycle and repurpose.

Constructing the Stork: Canvas, Paint, and Old Shirts

For the main body, I used sturdy canvas bags. To get that beautiful, weathered look, I applied three coats of warm white acrylic paint, allowing it to dry thoroughly between each layer. This gives the fabric a wonderful texture that holds its shape perfectly.

One of the most special parts of this build was using a collar from one of my husband’s old shirts to give the stork a smart, professional look. I also used pieces of old T-shirts and felt to create my signature hearts for his back and sides. It’s those little touches of “home” that make a handmade piece so special, don’t you think?

The Fine Details: Eyes, Beak, and a Golden Egg

A character really lives in the details!

  • The Beak: Made from canvas and cut into a sharp triangle, I painted it and finished it with a high-gloss coating to make it look stiff and professional.
  • The Delivery: Hanging from his beak is a beautiful golden goose egg, suspended by a delicate chain.
  • The Eyes: These were a real labour of love! I used wooden discs, foam, and glass eyes, finished off with hand-stitched felt eyelashes to give him that wide-eyed, curious expression.
  • The Legs: I crafted the legs from canvas and even included ball joints so they have a bit of movement.

The Grand Reveal

After an epic eight-video journey documenting every stitch and brushstroke, he is finally finished! I’ve added a ring to his back so he can hang from the ceiling, looking exactly like he’s in mid-flight, ready to make a very special delivery.

Combining the traditional art of sewing with modern AI planning has been such an eye-opening experience. It just goes to show that no matter how long you’ve been crafting, there is always something new and exciting to learn!

I hope this inspires you to look at your holiday photos in a whole new way. What character will you bring to life next?
