Fran’s Crafting Resources: Felt, Quilting, Cardboard Weaving, Beads & Jewellery, and Pipecleaners

Welcome back to my crafting corner! At the beginning of January, I made a promise to myself to put a much greater emphasis on research and finding the best resources to elevate our projects. After spending some quality time diving into the wonderful world of online crafting, I’ve gathered a treasure trove of inspiration to share with you.

I’ve divided my discoveries into five exciting categories. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just starting out, there’s something here for everyone!

1. The Magic of Felt

Felt is easily one of the most versatile and beginner-friendly materials out there. I personally love working on little projects like felt fish or adorable rabbits. It’s a sturdy fabric that doesn’t fray, making it perfect for detailed work.

Pro-Tip: If you want extra stability, try “double felting” by using heat-and-bond to fuse two pieces together.

Resources to Check Out:

  • Ella Feltra: Beautiful, tiny projects that are just exquisite.
  • Felty Treats: Based in the UK, this site is all about making felt sweets—think pastries and ice cream cones! They make the perfect companions for handmade teddy bears.
  • Deia do Feltro: A wonderful resource for creative felt variations.

2. Weaving Wonders & Aquatic Decor

I stumbled upon some truly unique techniques that I just had to share. One of the most intriguing is cardboard weaving, which I found through a Peruvian resource called Club de Manualidades. It uses a specific format that creates beautiful, structured patterns.

I’ve also been looking into aquatic-themed decor. Sites like Manualidades Variadas para Todos showcase incredible “aquatic pillows” and ocean-inspired decorations that can really add a splash of personality to a room.

3. Quilting: Don’t Toss Those Scraps!

If there is one rule in my craft room, it’s this: Never throw away your fabric bits! Even the tiniest remnants can be turned into charming pin cushions or incorporated into a larger quilted piece.

Resources to Check Out:

  • Mart Fetli Isler: She does incredible work using remnants of blue jean fabrics. It’s a great way to upcycle old denim!
  • Joe June and May Quilting: This site is fantastic for learning clever tricks to put quilts together quickly and easily.
  • Sewing Tricks: A must-visit for anyone looking to sharpen their technique.

4. Adding the Bling: Beads & Jewelry

While I might not wear a lot of jewelry myself, I absolutely love incorporating beads and bangles into my fabric projects. Think about adding a beaded border to a doll’s dress or sewing jewels onto the edge of a decorative pillow.

Where to find inspiration:

  • Wedding Decoration Ideas: Great for high-end, elegant beading inspiration.
  • Fatima with Craft: A wonderful resource for blending embroidery with beads to create something truly unique.

5. The Humble Pipe Cleaner

You might think of pipe cleaners as just for kids’ crafts, but they are actually a secret weapon for serious crafters! They come in every color imaginable—even glitter—and they are incredibly inexpensive.

I use them for structural support in sewing projects (like putting them inside the fingers of a doll to make them poseable) and for making intricate flowers.

Innovative Creators:

  • Easy Studio Crafts: Her pipe cleaner flowers are so realistic they are almost life-like.
  • Kitschy Flore: She creates entire creatures by wrapping pipe cleaners around foil bodies and then “shaving” the fuzzy bits for texture. It’s a fascinating technique!

Final Thoughts

Researching these resources has reminded me just how much creativity is out there. From the vibrant felt treats of the UK to the traditional weaving of Peru, there is so much we can learn from one another.

I’ll be posting all the specific links in my video description, so be sure to check them out and let me know which one inspires you most! Happy crafting!
